Question 1 - Ecosystems

2. (a) Correctly classify the pairs of organisms below under the categories of Mutualism, Commensalism and Parasitism:

(i) Honeybee and flower
(ii) Tapeworm and child
(iii) Suckerfish (attaches to shark and feeds on its scraps) and shark
(iv) Orchid and tree
(v) Bird vine and citrus tree
(vi) Gut bacteria (digest grass to sugars and other nutrients) and cow
(vii) Ticks and cattle

7 marks
(b). The following are organisms found in the rainforest. Boa constrictor, ocelot, agouti , toucan, grasshopper, butterfly, mushroom, wild pigs, mountain rose, palm trees, grasses. Develop a food web based on their interaction, identifying the producers, primary and secondary consumers.
6 marks
(c). Overhunting of agouti has drastically reduced the population. Describe 3 effects the reduction of the agouti population has on the foodweb.
3 marks
(d). It is estimated that the Amazon rainforest is being lost at the rate of 20,000 ha/yr, and if deforestation continues at current rates, scientists estimate nearly 80 to 90% of tropical rainforest ecosystems will be destroyed by the year 2020. This will lead to definite increase in global warming. Explain the concept of global warming, and its relationship to the greenhouse effect.
6 marks
(e). Identify 3 personal actions you can take to decrease your carbon footprint and decrease global warming.
3 marks
(a)(
Description
Relationship
(i)
Honeybee and flower
Honeybee benefits with nectar and flower benefits with pollination

Mutualism

(ii)
Tapeworm and child Tapeworm feeds and child looses nutrients

Parasitism

(iii)
Suckerfish (attaches to shark and feeds on its scraps) and shark Suckerfish benefits by feeding on scraps) and shark does not benefit or loose
Commensalism
(iv)
Orchid and tree Orchid benefits by getting light and tree does not benefit or loose
Commensalism
(v)
Bird vine and citrus tree Bird vine feeds and citrus tree looses nutrients

Parasitism

(vi)
Gut bacteria (digest grass to sugars) and cow Gut bacteria benefits by having a habitat and cow benefits by getting nutrients

Mutualism

(vi)
Ticks and cattle Ticks feeds and cattle loose nutrients
Parasitism
food web

(b)

(c) Decreasing the agouti population may:

  1. decrease the number of ocelot as they will have less food
  2. decrease the number of boa constrictor as they will have less food
  3. increase the density of palm trees as many seed will germinate near their parent plants
  4. slow the spread of palm trees as agouti disperse palm seeds

(d) Gases which cause most global warming are:

  1. Water vapour
  2. Carbon dioxide
  3. Methane

Increase of these gases cause the atmosphere to prevent Electromagnetic Radiation (infra red) from leaving the Earth's atmosphere. This traps the energy from sunlight and thus increases the amount of heat in the atmosphere and Earth's surface.

(e) Carbon footprint may be decreased by:

  1. Use energy efficiency appliances and lighting
  2. Switch off appliances and lights when not is use
  3. Alternatives to driving - using bicycles and walking
  4. Drive a low carbon emitting vehicle
  5. Reduce Air Travel
  6. Use alternative energy sources
  7. Eat locally-produced food
  8. Decrease water usage
  9. Reuse and recycle
  10. Plant trees
